Evan Longoria finished his first playoff game of his career 3-3 with a pair of homeruns and three RBIs, Akinori Iwamura had two hits and an RBI and James Shields tossed 6 1/3 innings allowing three runs as the Tampa Bay Rays won their first playoff game in franchise history, topping the Chicago White Sox 6-4 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five playoff series.
Longoria got the scoring started for the Rays with a solo shot off White Sox starter Javier Vazquez in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. Chicago struck back in the top of the third inning as Dewayne Wise hit a two-out three-run blast off Shields to give the White Sox a 3-1 advantage.
Vazquez couldn’t hold that lead for Chicago though as Tampa struck back in the bottom half of the third as Iwamura tripled home Jason Bartlett and Willy Aybar followed with a sacrifice fly to left to plate Iwamura, tying the score at 3-3. Longoria then stepped to the plate and hit his second homerun in as many at-bats and the Rays were in front for good.
Tampa added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth as Longoria singled home B.J. Upton and Carl Crawford added an RBI single that scored Aybar. Dan Wheeler finished the day off for the Rays as he gave up a longball to Paul Konerko in the ninth but then set down Ken Griffey Jr., Alexei Ramirez and Jim Thome to earn the save.
Tampa will host Chicago again tomorrow with Scott Kazmir facing Mark Buehrle in Game Two. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. ET.

The Blue Angels jet demonstration team and other top military and civilian pilots will take to the skies over San Diego Friday as the Miramar Air Show begins a three-day run. The Blue Angels, the Navy’s elite precision-flying squadron, was absent from the Miramar Air Show last year for the first time in 35 years due to a scheduling conflict.
The F/A 18 Hornets used by the Blue Angels can hit speeds of 1,200 miles per hour, while maintaining formation just inches apart. The Blue Angels, formed in 1946, is among the most popular aviation acts in the world, entertaining about 15 million people at air shows last year, according to MCAS Miramar public affairs.
“A Salute to Marine Aviation” is the theme of this year’s three-day show, in part to highlight the key role Miramar has played in military aviation since the early days of World War II.

Dr. Susan Love is trying to answer such questions. Along with the Avon Foundation, she has launched the “Army of Women” Web site in hopes of gathering the largest pool of women in history for breast cancer research.
The organization’s goal is to build a database of one million women for breast cancer research. So far, 30,000 have signed up. We need all types of women. We need all types of ethnicities,” said Love, president of the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation. “We need all ages, because if we’re going to figure this out, we need to represent everybody that might get breast cancer.”

The famed Brazilian race car driver is a member of Team Penske and has reportedly failed to pay more than $5 million in taxes over a four year period. Not an oversight to be sure - he allegedly schemed with his 35 year old sister Katiucia ‘Kati’ Castroneves, who serves as his business manager, and his 71 year old attorney Alan Miller.
Castroneves has a mansion in Coral Gables, Florida. The three defendants will surrender to authorities and will make their initial appearance in front of a Miami judge on Friday in federal court.
Helio Castroneves won the Indianapolis 500 in both 2001 and 2002 and finished second in 2003. In the IndyCar Series this year, Castroneves won the Sonoma Grand Prix in late August and has finished in second spot seven times. He is poised to win the 2008 IndyCar Series driver championship on points - just 30 points separate Helio and Scott Dixon. It would be his first points title.

American Express Business Travel - Fare discounts
NEW YORK - U.S. airlines are getting tougher on fare discounts for companies that cut back on travel in the softer economy.
In a teleconference and webcast Tuesday, American Express Business Travel officials talked about market trends and the business travel environment ahead of the release an annual business travel outlook.
Herve Sedky, a vice president and general manager of global advisory services, said airlines face a combination of a weaker global economy, uncertainty in the financial sector and high fuel costs. Corporate travel managers are dealing with new airline fees and fewer flights as carriers cut capacity. The result, Sedky said, is that many companies are becoming more cautious about business travel, increasingly viewing it as an investment rather than simply a cost of doing business.
American Express said the average airfare paid for trips originating in North America rose to $260 in the second quarter from $236 in the same period last year. The average international fare climbed to $1,980 from $1,788 over the same time.
The study also found that hotel rates in 2009 should be more favorable to guests than in recent years, as the room supply in the U.S. increases. But gateway cities like New York may not see declining occupancy as international travelers take advantage of favorable exchange rates.
American Express Business Travel delayed the release of its full outlook for global business travel in 2009, scheduled for Tuesday, to reassess its findings after the recent tumult on Wall Street.
